Simple Steps To Avoid Remote Working Cyber Security Risks

By 6th April 2021Blog

Whilst data integrity and cybersecurity systems that are used to protect the IT resources of businesses across the country are often very complex, they are built on very simple principles and rely on the vigilance and behaviours of everyone who uses them.

However, a survey undertaken by Forcepoint found that the stress of the last year has affected IT security, as burned-out staff have inadvertently caused security breaches.

However, simple steps and ensuring a framework for support and security is set up can help avoid many of these issues. Here are some steps your business can take to avoid remote working security risks.

Discourage Shadow IT

Shadow IT, the use of systems without the approval of your IT department is naturally a risk factor for many computer systems. However, nearly half (46 per cent) of IT staff surveyed said they relied on shadow IT programs to help perform tasks more easily.

To reduce this risk, it is important to encourage only the use of systems approved by your IT team and to provide this team with the resources and structure they need to ensure they can meet the needs of your staff.

Provide Support To Staff

The primary human factor involved in many security breaches is stress.

When staff feel under pressure they can end up making more mistakes, such as sending emails to the wrong people (in some cases a GDPR breach), clicking on phishing emails and increasing the use of shadow IT and non-approved devices.

It is important therefore not only to focus on technical solutions but also to ensure that staff feel secure in their position. Encourage staff to disconnect outside of working hours, as well as to focus on completing their job in risk-free ways rather than simply finishing the job quickly.
